There was a South Park episode where the two crippled kids (Jimmy and Timmy) misunderstood what the gangs called the Crips and the Bloods were all about. They thought it was all about being handicapped: Crips were people who became crippled and Bloods were people who’d been that way their whole life. In the end they went to LA and got the two gangs to stop fighting each other by saying, “It doesn’t matter how you got here — we’re all Crips together.”
My Oklahoma BFF and I thought the episode was hilarious. Our friendship went back over half a century, so when we IM’d, we covered every topic imaginable. We both had very dark senses of humor, and at some point we decided that we needed to make the word crip “the insider word” in the crippled community. We thought the best way to do that was to use the word at every opportunity.
After spending a month trying to work the word into every email, letter, and conversation, we found out that “crip” already was the insider word in the crippled community. Did we ever feel silly.
Ah well — live and learn.
